Tremendous advancements in surgery occurred during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Anesthesia allowed surgeons to take more time and develop techniques, while sterilization reduced sepsis, thereby increasing survival rates. Today, surgery today is ubiquitous—virtually everyone has had it or will require some version of it in their lifetime. Procedures range from simple outpatient cases to complex, multidisciplinary cases that require hospital stays.
Now in its 91st year, Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla continues to boast some of the most talented, experienced and trusted surgeons practicing today, specializing in everything from cardiothoracic, gynecologic, neuro-invasive and orthopedic surgeries to minimally invasive and robotic surgery that dramatically reduce or eliminate hospital stays and recovery time.
Our community deserves access to world-class surgical care, and philanthropy is critical to making it happen. This was true in 1924 with a gift from our founding benefactress, Ellen Browning Scripps, to establish the original Scripps Memorial Hospital in downtown La Jolla. With just four state-of-the-art operating rooms, it honorably served its small beach-side community, offering its surgeons opportunities to save lives and innovate in surgery. The same is true today, with our surgeons on the leading-edge of a wide range of procedures and philanthropy needed to ensure that our surgery facilities remain first-rate.
To ensure that Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla remains on the forefront of surgical excellence, continual facility and equipment upgrades are vital. To that end, Scripps has embarked on a much-needed project to upgrade three minimally invasive operating rooms, purchase and upgrade video towers and purchase additional equipment. With your support, we know we can exceed these goals and continue giving Scripps patients the top care they deserve.
